Garmin Approach G7 Golf GPS Review

The Garmin Approach G7 is the king of golf GPS devices! It does everything you would expect from a golf GPS device plus more.

The design of the device is simple but stunning. It looks like an old-school Android smartphone and even somewhat functions like one (it can display the notifications you receive on your iPhone when synced).

Despite its smartphone-like design, the G7 is made of a tough and durable body that will last long, can withstand a few falls, and can survive accidental contact with water.

The body of this device is amazing but its screen is even more remarkable. It is a TFT, multi-touch touchscreen that makes it extremely easy to operate the watch. The screen’s 160 by 240 pixels full-color, high-resolution display means that anything being displayed on the screen is very clear and easy to read.

The G7 has a size of 95.6 grams, which is not too light (in comparison with the Garmin G10) but not too heavy either (it is lighter than most modern smartphones).

Now we arrive at the meat and potatoes of the device: the technology that powers it.  The Approach G7 has an inbuilt high-sensitivity GPS receiver and chipset with a memory of over 38,000 preloaded worldwide course maps. This means that it is able to accurately calculate and show you distances on these many courses.

Some of the distances that you will be able to quickly read from the device include the distances to key points on the green and the distances to the doglegs and layups.

This amazing device is also capable of taking into account elevations on the course to calculate the effective yardage between you and certain points on the green.

You will also be able to use this device to measure your shot distances from any point on the course.

Upon completing each hole, you will be able to feed your score and the scores of a few of your friends into the G7’s digital scorecard. The scorecard is versatile with multiple scoring options including Match Play, Skins, Stableford, and Stroke Play.

Stats such as fairways hit, putts per round and strokes can also be saved.

Saved scores and stats can be reviewed on the device or on the supporting Garmin Golf App. The App can also be used to update the device.

In addition to the features mentioned above, the G7 also has other exciting golfing features that can improve or hasten your judgment on the course. For example, it has the green view option that allows for a flyover view of the course from your position. You can use what you see to avoid hazards or change your gameplay to get a good score. What is even more amazing is that the green view mode allows manual pin placement.

The G7 is also capable of suggesting the perfect club for the distance it has calculated provided that you had already fed the right information (best clubs for certain distances) into it prior to enabling this feature on the course.

Lastly, the G7 is compatible with Garmin’s TruSwing golf club sensor. Through the use of this sensor, the G7 can calculate multiple elements of your swing rhythm and suggest changes in certain elements to ensure that your swing closely mimics the mathematically determined perfect swing to improve your drive. A couple of training sessions with this feature turned on could potentially make you a big hitter just like Dustin Johnson.
